The predators rely on the silence of the victim to keep running back and being able to feed again. Child sexual abuse (CSA) is known to be an underreported epidemic. Despite the statistics provided below, experts agree that the prevalence and incidence of the victimization of children is far greater.
Studies by David Finkelhor, Director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center, found the following:
1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys* is a victim of child sexual abuse (*it is known the rate of boys being victimized is much higher, as this abuse is more likely to be dismissed and not reported)
Self-report studies show that 20% of adult females and 5-10% of adult males recall a childhood sexual assault or sexual abuse incident; of note is that many victims do not have recall regarding their abuse, therefore this rate is likely much higher.
Children are most vulnerable to CSA between the ages of 5 and 13
